Ernie Jones - Artist

Even as a child, I liked to draw – especially airplanes. I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, and began my art education at Mount Vernon High School. After graduation I drew on my love of airplanes and joined the United States Air Force. While on duty in Keflavik, Iceland, I was juried into the correspondence school, Famous Artists School of Westport Connecticut, whose eleven founding members included Albert Dorne and Norman Rockwell. After the Air Force, I continued my art education at Northern Virginia Community College.

I moved to Orange County in 1972. Since Southern California offers such an incredible array of beautiful and historic sites, after retiring from United Airlines, I decided to resume my fine art career. I enjoy bringing my artistic interpretation to familiar local venues in Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. I prefer a realistic style, and use strong, rich colors in my work, paying great attention to detail. Before I start a painting, I take several photos of the subject, and then work from a compilation of preferred elements in each shot. I also paint commissioned art where I often work from a favorite family photo. My paintings can be found in homes and businesses across the U.S. and in Asia.   I never stop learning. I collaborate with artists in this gallery, and even draw inspiration from watching art classes on public television. I feel my knowledge and understanding of art continues to grow through increased exposure to other fine artists with whom I share ideas and experiences.

If you want to spend a fun evening in Laguna Beach, please visit our gallery during the First Thursdays Art Walk, a city-wide event throughout Laguna Beach, held on the First Thursday of every month from 6 - 9 p.m. Over 40 galleries open their doors to friends and visitors and provide refreshments, live art demonstrations and great interactions with the artists.
